The worst forecasts for DO Ribera de Duero (Spain) wines are confirmed, with a 10% drop in sales in 2023.
The current generalized downward trend in wine consumption and two successive campaigns (those of 2022 and 2021) with a decrease in grape production are the causes that could be behind the results of the sale of back labels for wines with Designation of Origin Ribera del Duero in 2023.
If 100.7 million bottles of wine were sold in 2022, 2023 ended with 90.6 million, which is 10% less. But the truth is that 2022 and 2021 were the only years that exceeded 100 million back labels. For example, in 2020 the back labels distributed in the DO wineries were 78 million in an atypical year caused by the pandemic, and the previous year they barely exceeded 89 million.
In terms of types of wine, vintage wine continues to be the leader in sales. 64 of the 90.6 million bottles sold were of this type. This was followed by crianza wine with 21 million back labels and Reserva with 5.2 million back labels sold. The remaining back labels went to Gran Reserva bottles.
Looking at the months, it is undoubtedly the month of November, before Christmas, when most Ribera del Duero wine was sold, exceeding 10.5 million. This was followed by February and March. The least, August and September, with 5 and 5.6 million back labels distributed.
