A growth in value not matched by volume, the now well-known difficult moment for Germany, and China’s distancing from wine products.
Among confirmations, primarily the United States, and new developments, the strong rise of Russia (but the impact of the ongoing conflict will have to be evaluated in the future), international trade linked to wine is not experiencing its best moment, especially due to a complex 2023.
However, if France and Italy are confirmed as the major exporters at the global level, as reported here, the United States remains the main wine-importing country both in value and in volume. This is according to the analysis by the Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino (Oemv), with a focus on the last 12 months (up to June 2023). T
he USA maintains its leadership with a 7% increase in value amounting to 6,925.1 million euros, surpassing everyone also in volume, albeit down by 3%, standing at 1,373.3 million liters. However, this trend is not linear and reflects the difficulties faced by the world in 2023. Not surprisingly, in the first half of 03, there was a decline both in value (-65 million euros) and volume (-61.3 million liters).
Behind the United States is the UNITED KINGDOM, the second market in value and third in volume behind Germany. A market worth 4,705.7 million euros (+3.5% or 159.8 million euros), but which has slowed orders to other countries (-6.4%, and therefore with a reduction of 87 million liters) in June 2023, standing at 1,266.9 million liters.
The GERMAN MARKET, the second outlet for Italian wine, is the third overall in terms of import value and second only to the United States in volume, but has declined in both, yet another confirmation of the difficult situation faced by Germany. Here imports fell by 4% in value (2,708.9 million euros) and 3% in volume (1,367.3 million liters) with an ‘hemorrhage’ of over 41 million liters.
There’s also a sharp slowdown from CHINA, which was a strong importer but has changed pace, as shown by the 114.8 million liters of wine ‘abandoned’ in the market for a ‘saving’ of 177 million euros.
Conversely, RUSSIA has made an opposite choice, with imports proceeding at a fast pace: +123 million liters and +393 million euros, figures that have paradoxically projected it as the most grown market in the last year.
